Find Your State's Unemployment Office

Always file and check your claim on your state's own official site. Use the federal directory below to confirm you have the right one, or jump straight to your state.

File on the official site — and nowhere else

When you search "[state] unemployment," the first results are often ads, lookalike domains, or third-party "filing help" services that charge for something the state does for free. Unemployment claims should only ever be filed on your state agency's own website, which almost always ends in .gov (a few use .us or a clearly official state domain). No legitimate state agency charges a fee to file a claim, and none will ask for your full Social Security number over email or text.

Before you start, have these ready — it makes filing far faster on any state's site:

  • Your Social Security number and a government photo ID (states increasingly use ID.me or similar identity checks)
  • An 18-month history of employers with addresses, phone numbers, and your dates of employment
  • Your reason for separation and any layoff or separation notice
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, your work-authorization document number
